Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
