Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of several weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – truly, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.

At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
