A recent study reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
